This paper comments on the successes of the Party of the Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) in Moldova's parliamentary elections of 25 February 2001, focusing on the bid to join the Russia-Belarus Union and to give Russian the status of an official language. The paper outlines Moldova's problematic relations with Transdniestria and the Gagauz minority, assesses risks and chances of a membership in the Russia-Belarus Union and addresses the implications of making Russian an official language.
