This paper identifies stakes and interests in Montenegro's dispute over independence from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The paper introduces the history of the dispute since the early 1990s, points to the ethnic composition of Montenegro and sheds light on the involved political powers. Subsequently, the paper explores inter-ethnic relations and tensions, focusing on the role of the parties and the media. The paper argues that Montenegro's potential line of conflict lies between populations of the same ethnicity with different political choices and not between different ethnic communities.
