This paper discusses options for overcoming the separation of Cyprus before the backdrop of the rejected Annan Plan. The paper introduces the history of the Cyprus conflict, describes international efforts to find a diplomatic solution and assesses the impact of the EU factor. Subsequently, the paper presents the terms of the Annan Plan, outlines political changes in both parts of Cyprus and looks at the results of the negotiations in 2004. The paper argues that the prospects of renegotiating the Annan Plan are rather bleak and suggests lifting the international embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot side.
