This paper explores the relationships between women and political parties, and between political parties and social movements that organize women in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India. Strategies that parties adopt to gain women’s support during elections and relationships between women’s leadership and women’s representation in political parties are analyzed. Furthermore, the author assesses if women’s movements have been successful in strengthening parties’ commitments to gender equality.
