This paper reviews how race has been socially constructed in the US since the founding of the republic. The author examines how conceptions of racial difference and inequality have affected, and been affected by, prevailing views of citizenship and American national identity. The paper concludes that American racism has constantly been challenged, not only by its victims, but also by its purported beneficiaries, in the name of universal human rights.
