This paper analyzes trends in the migration of foreign workers to oil-rich and other labor-receiving countries in the Middle East. It examines causes, patterns and cases of discriminatory or xenophobic practices by employers, civil society and the state. Formal redress mechanisms and non-state assistance are examined to determine the extent to which local problems that migrants face can be addressed. Finally, policy suggestions are offered for improving relations between migrants and host communities, employers, recruitment agencies and governments.
