This essay outlines a theory of race applicable to the social and historical circumstances of the US. The author sketches an account of why racial inequality is, according to him, so stubbornly persistent, commenting on racial stereotypes, racial stigma and racial justice. He offers a conceptual framework for the practice of social criticism on race-related issues that might encourage reflection among political and intellectual elites and in this way promote social reform. To conclude, the author claims that race is all about embodied social signification.
