This paper reviews case studies from Latin American, Asian and African countries that provide quantitative analysis of how members of a household take care of each other and explore the implications of the findings for poverty and social exclusion. The author assesses the quality of these studies focusing on the design, data, scope and weaknesses of the surveys, especially with respect to unpaid care work. She concludes with general recommendations of future time use surveys in developing countries.
