This paper discusses the effectiveness of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach in Indonesia. The author examines the codes of conduct and the environmental impact of large business within the local historical and cultural context. It further argues whether CSR and voluntary initiatives have the capacity to change the day-to-day behavior of transnational corporations and if the CSR is relevant to Indonesia at this stage of its development.
