This paper examines the prospect and impact of rising food prices in developing countries in the short and the long term. The author argues that while in the short term the food crisis is harmful to most urban and rural households, in the long term, moderately higher prices have positive effects on the majority of rural households and thus on poverty as well. The author suggests differentiated development policies to address both short- and long-term causes and impacts of rising food prices.
