Police components have recently begun to play a more visible role in peace support operations. And yet, those who deploy these forces remain unclear about how to design and deploy them properly, and even what functions they should perform. In order to overcome these problems, particularly in relation to the African Union, this report looks at three case studies – Somalia, Darfur and Mali – in order to craft suitable recommendations on the funding, training and deploying of police personnel in peace operations.
