This brief discusses the possibility of China building its own aircraft carrier. It argues that the geopolitical and military implications of such a development would bring about a major change in the Asian strategic balance, causing a host of new anxieties. The author predicts a possible counter response from other countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, while the Straits of Malacca are strategically important to China's energy needs.
