This paper addresses issues of nuclear disarmament between Russia and the US before the backdrop of the START I treaty expiring at the end of 2009. It summarizes the interests and aims of both parties in the field of nuclear disarmament, identifies controversial issues such as the counting of warheads and the inclusion of delivery systems and comments on the general state of disarmament. The author argues that it is reasonable to assume that a nuclear-free world will remain a vision.
