This working paper documents how the relationship between India's labor market and international trade has evolved after the initiation of structural reforms in the 1990s. The author begins by outlining Indian economic policy since independence in 1947, then describes the structure and segmentation of the labor market. Following this, the paper explores how state intervention and international integration have influenced the labor market. The author concludes that the reforms have not had the expected impact and indeed there has been negative growth in employment. Possibilities for further research are also provided.
