This working paper examines the interrelated issues of the features of the global production networks in which Taiwanese firms are involved and the way in which IT can be used to facilitate participation in these networks. The author begins by discussing the importance of inter-firm linkages, and the emergence of global production and knowledge networks. The way in which IT production and applications interact within global networks is examined, after which the author explores the PC and integrated chip industries. The author concludes that the essence of IT application is to facilitate networked firms' participation in setting the rules of the game for industrial competition.
