This paper reviews trends in poverty, vulnerability and extension, and the policy context in which extension is located. It provides an overview of main concepts, explores wider trends and provides examples of where innovative approaches to extension may impact the poor. The paper concludes that poverty is multifaceted and that agricultural change can impact the poor through production, consumption, price and employment effects.
