This paper assesses the impact of the Gyandoot project, an e-commerce and e-governance activity in India. The project aimed at providing useful information to people in rural areas and being an interface between the district government and people. The paper is based on an assessment study carried out at three levels: the village level, where responses were studied from various categories of users; at the level of the service providing kiosk operators who are in direct touch with the users; and at the level of the administration of Gyandoot, where policies were made, mechanisms evolved and the project was implemented.
