This paper explores government of India schemes aimed at alleviating poverty. The authors identify what policy initiatives might better support the poor in their search for enhanced livelihoods. They describe and analyze in depth various poverty reduction schemes in India, including the broad provisions, administrative arrangements^and the intended beneficiaries. They identify sources of weakness in implementation, sources of strength and provide a brief policy history.
