This paper analyzes the changes in livelihood and processes of diversification in two villages in Andhra Pradesh, India. It begins with an exploration of the livelihood in the villages and how these changed between 1975, 1989 and 2001. The authors analyze the changes in their institutional, political and economic context and to identify the forces behind the changes. The paper concludes by considering the impact of changing livelihoods and poverty and inequality levels within the villages. The authors summarize the main findings and identify potential policy contributions.
