This paper describes the food economy approach based on case studies from Zimbabwe and Kenya. It illustrates how this approach links livelihood information to an analysis of the effects of political, economic and social change. The authors argue that it is helpful to determine appropriate responses and target both relief and development interventions. The paper shows that it is possible to conduct livelihoods assessments in situations of chronic conflict and political instability, and that they are essential in designing appropriate interventions as well as to prioritize who needs external assistance.
