This paper discusses how to tackle extreme poverty in Papua New Guinea. According to the authors, the extent of extreme poverty in Papua New Guinea, Australia's nearest neighbor, is not widely known in Australia or even in Papua New Guinea itself. They argue that about one million people constitute the most disadvantaged people in Papua New Guinea. The paper explains that extreme poverty, defined as a combination of low incomes, poor access to education, health and other services, poses a very complex challenge to the Papua New Guinea government, the nongovernment and private sector organizations working in Papua New Guinea.
