This paper examines smoking behavior among 15-19-year-olds in Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand using national level youth surveys. It analyzes possible social and health problems due to smoking based on the country’s background of tobacco and cigarette availability and production. The authors discuss the effects of the following covariates on smoking habits: urban residence and locality, level of parents’ education and relationship with them, aspiration for college education, school attendance and marital status.
