This publication examines whether or not various African countries are experiencing a consolidation of democracy, and if so, what form of democracy this is. Using results of the Afrobarometer public attitude surveys conducted in 19 countries, the authors find that Africa is characterized by a diversity of political regimes, the majority of which are unconsolidated hybrid systems. The authors conclude that while democratic attitudes among the African populations surveyed are generally on the rise, the project of democracy-building still has a long way to go.
