This publication introduces the concept of 'lived poverty', and uses it to assess the extent to which Sub-Saharan Africa's record of economic growth has made material differences in the lives of ordinary Africans in 10 countries. The authors provide a Lived Poverty Index, in order to allow for cross-country comparison, and find that whilst there have been overall decreases in lived poverty between 2000 and 2008 in six countries, in others it has remained the same or even increased. The paper also examines the impact of democracy on poverty reduction.
