This paper analyzes the economic and technological context for the emergence of transnational communities and outlines their contributions to the emergence and upgrading of suppliers and nodes in global production networks. It then examines the cases of Taiwan, India and China in detail to illustrate how technical communities both complement and accelerate the development of international production network. The paper concludes with speculations about the changing relationship between transnational technical communities and global production networks.
