This publication explores changes in the Middle East beginning in 1999 and their implications for future US defense and strategic policy. It includes case studies examining the political, economic and social trends affecting the region and US policy. The authors identify medium- and long-term strengths and vulnerabilities of regional regimes, exploring political succession, demographic changes, Islamic activism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction. They also assess the implications of those changes, trends and issues for US strategic interests and defense policy.
