This paper takes Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological notion of power in the family to understand the Hong Kong Chinese family structure and to find out who makes major decisions in the family. The author compares western understanding of family structure and Hong Kong Chinese family structure with the help of available survey data and based on interviews conducted with young adults of Hong Kong.
