This paper addresses the implications of a knowledge-based economy on the organization of world production, focusing on Taiwan. It discusses the status of Taiwan’s knowledge-based industries, the restructuring of the world production system under the knowledge-based economy, and the changes in the market system. Further, it explores Taiwan’s personal computer and IC industries to illustrate the changing patterns of the division of labor and to show that the knowledge-based economy is much more than just high-technology manufacturing.
