This paper reviews the way in which issues surrounding process documentation and monitoring (PDR) have been explored in development literature. The author explores the role of knowledge, objectivity and communication in social theory. He then discusses the knowledge in development methodologies, epistemology and participatory development narratives. The article highlights the role of development structures, actors and agencies, highlighting transaction costs, governance, the role of NGOs and the state. It concludes with empirical evidence of information generation and exchange.
