This paper explores the economic and social importance of rangelands, including the biodiversity they harbor. The authors introduce rangelands as regions dominated by grass and grass-like species, discussing their biodiversity, livelihoods and related institutional structures. They discuss the formation of rangelands, regional systems and provide economic, ecological and ethical arguments for rangeland conservation. The paper offers insights into how rangelands can be conserved: by controlling grazing, creating protected areas and restoring habitats.
