This paper reviews the design of two UK Department of International Development (DFID) projects in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, India. Both projects aimed to support the Indian government’s efforts to eliminate poverty through its watershed development program. It explores how the concepts and development of the sustainable livelihoods (SL) approach and framework have fed into the design process of the two projects. The author introduces the DFID's role in support of rural development and discusses the Orissa and Andhra Pradesh partnerships in terms of their design, comparing the two approaches, and concludes with a discussion of the strengths and challenges of the SL approach.
