This paper assesses the range of impacts that tourism has on the livelihoods of rural residents in parts of Namibia. The author provides a background of conventional livelihood approaches to tourism, rural development and livelihood strategies in rural Namibia. She then explores the impact of tourism on sustainable livelihood (SL) within the SL framework and its impact on assets and livelihood strategies and activities. The article concludes with a discussion of the costs and benefits of matching tourism with livelihood strategies.
