This paper describes how sustainable livelihoods (SL) concepts were used to assess the impact of the African Wildlife Foundation project in Kenya. The authors introduce the project, describing the SL methodology and its applications for assessment, data gathering and analysis. They reflect on the results and implications, demonstrating that the SL approach can be applied to plan new projects and review existing ones that were not planned using the SL framework. The paper explains the rationale for developing an impact assessment methodology incorporating SL analysis, summarizing the methodology and its application and identifying lessons for applying SL approaches.
