This paper presents the findings of a study that aimed to identify the key issues affecting the livelihoods of the rural poor in Cambodia. The author introduces the development context in Cambodia, summarizing the characteristics and trends of rural poverty, outlines the objectives of the study and describes how the sustainable livelihoods (SL) approach was applied. She explores the livelihoods of the rural poor in detail, identifying key issues to be considered when developing a program of support and assessing the value-added of the SL approach. The article concludes with an assessment of livelihood constraints and provides suggestions for program development strategies.
