This briefing paper details African public opinion on democracy and development. Its findings include, among others, that for Africans democracy equal freedom, that support for democracy is widespread, and that Africans expect democracy to deliver basic welfare. Furthermore, unemployment is the people's primary development concern, corruption is seen as pervasive, and between elections, political participation is low.
