This paper examines European citizens' sentiments toward national and supranational institutions based on data from Eurobarometer. Whereas confidence in European institutions has fallen significantly since the economic crisis, trust in national governments and institutions has risen. For the first time since its creation, a majority of European citizens no longer trust the European Central Bank (ECB). In Germany, the decrease in confidence toward the ECB is flanked by strong anti-capitalist sentiments and a sharp decline in support for the social market economy, according to the author.
