This document explains the consumer bankruptcy procedures in the US and five European countries: the UK, Ireland, Germany, France and Spain. The author considers statistics on consumer bankruptcies, which reveal the first effects of the economic crisis, and asks what is yet to come and which bankruptcy procedures are the most appropriate. After presenting each procedure, she traces the developments in national bankruptcy numbers and highlights striking developments in the different countries studied.
