This paper examines the chances and implications of free trade agreements (FTA) between Japan and Korea. The author provides an overview over postwar trade relations between the two countries and analyzes the similarity of export specialization, using indicators for competitiveness. He concludes that in spite of the minor economic advantages associated with the FTAs, the East Asian states are expected to sign them as a counterweight to integration in Europe and the Americas.
