This paper examines models of evolution of industrial districts (IDs) and in light of peculiar features of information and communication technology. It reviews the variety of existing explanations for enterprise clustering and the dynamics thereof. The author conducts a case study of Italy and concludes that Italian IDs have only partially exploited the potential offered by information and communications technologies. Combined with the lack of substantial organizational changes this raises questions in regard of the competitiveness of Italian IDs.
