This paper examines whether a new consensus on labor market policy is emerging in light of the East Asian economic crisis. The first section reviews the labor standards debate. The second section analyzes the labor policy response to the East Asian crisis. The author concludes that one must not rely on competitive markets for worker protection. Regulation needs to be part of national social agenda and not imposed externally, whilst international action should focus on rights rather than employment conditions.
