This paper examines the US-Mexican defense relationship and identifies areas of friction and commonality between US forces and their Mexican counterparts. In addition to a historical overview, the author examines the bilateral relationship in the post-9/11 environment and analyzes the structural challenges that impede closer cooperation across the border. The author argues that historic mistrust needs to be deconstructed through a comprehensive review of potential areas of commonality between the US and Mexico.
