This paper examines the role of government in global e-commerce. The author reviews the historic developments of markets and their regulation from the medieval town square market and up to the rise of global online markets. She stresses the crucial role of government in reducing transaction costs and concludes that e-commerce networks are less autonomous than they appear and will continue to rely on governmental frameworks.
