This paper examines how structural weaknesses in the real economy contributed to the Asian financial crisis. It introduces the concept of 'industrial upgrading' as a focusing device for identifying structural weaknesses in East Asia's electronics industry, uses this concept to explain possible causes for the pre-crisis crash in electronics exports, and presents empirical evidence. Subsequently, the paper asks what explains the delay in post-crisis trade adjustment and discusses perspectives for future industrial upgrading.
