This paper focuses on the impact social and fiscal policies play on income inequality in the EU. It analyzes how tax and benefit payments alter the distribution of household incomes to provide evidence on the effectiveness of a range of different policies to reduce disparities of household resources. The authors employ a microsimulation approach, allowing them to address some of the measurement problems encountered in comparative research on income inequality.
