This article presents the work of Dutch development cooperation since the 1970s. It examines how the focus of efforts has moved from poverty reduction to economic self-reliance, followed by the creation of a synthesis between the two. The paper also discusses new initiatives in Dutch development cooperation, which were created in light of new research about what constitutes poverty. The authors subsequently provide an overview of aid commitments and conclude that aid has been channeled to more deprived nations over the years.
