This essay outlines three security risks that should be of greater concern over next decades: renewed competition with a major military adversary, traumatic attacks, particularly from nonexplosive warfare weapons and erosion of support. It tries to improve the process by making possible futures the center of discussion and by asking what is likely to be undervalued in preparations for these futures. Keeping the national security aspect in mind, the author discusses and analyzes these risks and emphasizes on the need of new modes of thought to diminish the risks.
