This paper assesses the extent to which demographic factors explain substantial increases in national savings rates in East Asia. It employs a dynamic simulation model to analyze savings rates in transition economies and focuses on the case of Taiwan. The paper finds that demographic factors may underlie a substantial portion of the rise in net national savings experienced by the region.
