This paper surveys competitive dynamics in and the industrial organization of the electronics industry. It traces the evolution of the electronics industry, investigates competition dilemmas and sets forth possible explanations. Instead of focusing exclusively on the hardware dimension, it also looks at software, the role of information services and emerging internet-based services.
