This paper investigates political instability in the Philippines during the presidency of Joseph Estrada. It spotlights corruption in the political elite, nationalist backlash at his trade policies, the trials of economic decline and Estrada’s agitation of Christian-Muslim relations as wellsprings of dissatisfaction. The author concludes that even if Estrada is removed from office, his probable successor, Maria Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, is unlikely to bring about fundamental change.
