This paper addresses the impact of globalization on the geography of innovations systems and identifies the potential benefits of global linkages for developing countries. The analysis focuses on knowledge retention and acquisition initiatives and the emergence of global production networks (GPN). It argues that GPNs and the linkages they afford provide firms and industrial districts in developing countries with new opportunities for reverse knowledge outsourcing that can accelerate innovation and development.
